In response to recent security incidents in the Port Harcourt area of Nigeria, American citizens are encouraged to read the Department of State's April 29, 2004, Worldwide Caution Public Announcement available at http://travel.state.gov/travel/wwc.1.html. This document reminds American citizens that criminal elements and terrorists do not distinguish between official and civilian targets. This may include facilities where Americans citizens and other foreigners congregate or visit, including residential areas, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, hotels, outdoor recreation events, or resorts and beaches. U.S. citizens should remain in a heightened state of personal security awareness when attendance at such locations is projected. Please remain aware of your surroundings at all times and avoid areas in the city, which are known to have a high level of violent crime or other criminal activity.
U.S. citizens living or traveling in Nigeria are encouraged to register with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the State Department's travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov, and to obtain updated information on travel and security within Nigeria.
