The Public Affairs Section partnered with USAID and implementing partners (IPs) to brief the press on the President’s White House Summit on Malaria, highlighting USG support to Nigeria on malaria control and prevention. The briefing was attended by more than two dozen media organizations, including four major television stations. Polly Dunford, USAID/Nigeria General Development Officer, presented an overview of the President’s Malaria Initiative, noted Nigeria’s Health Minister Eyitayo Lambo’s attendance at the White House Summit, and summarized the USG’s commitment to the reduction of malaria in Nigeria. IP’s summarized their goals, objectives and accomplishments.

USAID and IPs – ENHANCE, COMPASS, NetMark, and the Society for Family Health - delivered a focused message that USG interventions and technical assistance in support of Government of Nigeria’s malaria program has made a difference, but malaria’s epidemiological, social and economic impact on Nigeria calls for a renewed focus to mitigate the devastating impact of the disease. They fielded tough questions and were positive in their appreciation and support for USG interventions.
The large turn out of journalists despite the approaching holiday season and simultaneous political events taking place in Abuja, indicates a high level of interest by Nigerian media on USG support to Nigeria in the health sector. We anticipate wide press placements the print and electronic media.
