U.S. Ambassador John Campbell on September 18 hosted 12 American Corner Coordinators during an American Corners Workshop in Abuja that occurred September 18-21, 2006. Ambassador Campbell said, “American Corners bring America's message to the world."
The Coordinators staff America Corners situated in the six geo-political regions namely, Abeokuta, Abuja, Bauchi, Calabar, Ibadan, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Port Harcourt. The four-day workshop began with the Ambassador’s reception where he announced that new American Corners located in Enugu, Maiduguri and Sokoto will be commissioned soon.
American Corners are gifts of the American people to the people of Nigeria. They are partnerships between the U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs Sections and host institutions. The Corners provide access to current and reliable information about the U.S. through book collections, the Internet, and through local programming to the general public. The book collections may include reference titles, works of fiction, books about HIVAIDS, business and government publications and information on how to study in the U.S. Embassy officials and U.S. Government representatives, and American citizens, serve as speakers, guests, and participants at the Corners especially on educational and cultural events.
During the workshop, the coordinators are expected to know what their roles and responsibilities are as staff members, how to use the Internet effectively, and how to organize programs for the public.
