The Counselor for Public Affairs, Atim Eneida George on Monday, June 8 visited the Sunrise International School, Asokoro, Abuja where she read to a combined class of pupils from primary 5 and 6. The reading program for primary school pupils is one of the CPAO’s major engagements with youths, and is meant to inculcate reading habits in young school children.
At Monday’s school reading, the Counselor for Public Affairs read excepts from the biography of one of United States’ most celebrated African Americans, Frederick Douglass. She told the students that Douglass played an important role in the emancipation of the Africa American community from captivity through his work as an editor and abolitionist.
She explained to the children that part of the major lessons in Douglass’ story was h is determination, because he learned to read and write as a slave; when teaching slaves to read and write was illegal.
The CPAO also donated books for the school library, book bags for the pupils and soccer and basket balls for the development of sports in the school. The school materials were donated by MIST , a humanitarian assistance agency of the U.S. Africa Command. The school’s head teacher Mrs. Rakiya Zubairu thanked the American people and the U.S. Mission Nigeria for the donation.
The CPAO was accompanied by Tatyana Battles, a member of the MIST team to the school visit.
