American Corner Abuja Hosts Global Citizens Program “1968/2008: the Parallels and Challenges”

The U.S. Mission Nigeria collaborated with Global Citizens Organization, a youth NGO, to engage youth within the Federal Capital Territory in an intergenerational public dialogue on global parallels and challenges spanning 1968 / 2008. The event was organized by the American Corner in Abuja, and participants included secondary students, journalists, university lectures, and religious organizations.
There were four key speakers: Ms. Atim Eneida George, Counselor for Public Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, Dr. Kabiri Mato, Head of Political Science at the University of Abuja, Imam Fuad Ademola Adeyemi, Chief Imam of Ansar-Ud-Deem Society Mosque in Abuja, and Dr. Jhalil Tafawa Balewa, son of Nigeria's late Prime Minister Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.
All the speakers spoke on the topic: “1968 / 2008: Retrospect on the Parallels and Challenges We Face Today”. The topic examined and discussed events such as the Vietnam War (1968) vis-à-vis the War in Iraq (2008); U.S. Primary Election (1968) and the assassination of Senator Robert “Bobby” Kennedy vis-à-vis the U.S. Primary Election (2008); the Mexico City Summer Olympics (1968) vis-à-vis Beijing Summer Olympics (2008); the Assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (1968) vis-à-vis the 40 Year Anniversary since the Assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (2008), etc.
