The America Corner Bauchi, located in the Professor Iya Abubakar Community Resource Center, celebrated International Women’s Day with a program that addressed the importance of education for Muslim women. The event attended by over 200 women was graced by the presence of Her Excellency Hajia A’isha Isa Yuguda, the first lady of Bauchi State.
The first speaker Hajia Halima Ibrahim presented the Muslim perspective on the rights of women to seek education. The second speaker Mrs. Funmi Omole from ATBU International Secondary School Bauchi spoke about issues hindering girl child education that often results in women and girls being mired in poverty. The two speakers urged women present to rise to the challenges of today and be educated, especially in the areas of information technology.
The event also served as an avenue to showcase the American Corner to see the kind of information available for the public. Her Excellency, Hajia A’isha Isa Yuguda toured the American Corner and the Community Resource Center.
After the initial ceremony, the program continued in the American Corner with a round table discussion with students of Abubakar T/Balewa University Bauchi chaired by Mrs Funmi Omole. They discussed ways to enlighten their fellow students in the secondary school as well as primary schools on the challenges for women that lie ahead.
After their discussion, the participants unanimously agreed to meet in American Corner on the first Saturday of each month with a view to finding a solution or ways to educate women and girls in and around the state on Girl Child Education as well as finding ways to involve girls that hawk in the street to seek an education.
