Ambassador Robin Sanders has assured the Acting chairman of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde that the US Government will continue to support the institution’s fight against corruption and financial crimes.
The Ambassador was responding to the EFCC acting Chairman’s acknowledgement and high praise of US Government’s training, equipment and capacity building support to Nigeria’s law enforcement effort when she paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.
Mr. Lamorde told the Ambassador that the EFCC remains strong, focused, and committed to its mandate to fight corruption and other economic and financial crimes despite recent shuffles in the institution’s leadership.
“I am here to assure you that our resources are still available to you. Our training programs are still available to you in our collaborative efforts to strengthen and enhance the capacity of your institution,” Ambassador Sanders affirmed.
Since 1999, the U.S. Embassy’s Narcotics and Law Enforcement Office (NLEO) in Nigeria has managed a dynamic and diverse law enforcement assistance program with Nigerian law enforcement agencies.
The law enforcement program covers seven major areas: counter narcotics, financial fraud (particularly ‘419’ advance-fee fraud), immigration crimes, police modernization, anti-corruption, and money laundering. It also covers some aspect of trafficking in persons. The program provides funding for training, technical assistance projects, equipment and material to the Government of Nigeria.
