Remarks by U.S. Ambassador Robin Renee Sanders

Award Ceremony for the Ambassador's Girls' Scholarship Program

Speech as prepared for delivery.
The School Hall, Government College, Keffi Nassarawa State
January 30, 2009

All protocols duly observed.

One of the issues we are continually working to improve in the United States is the education of our children.   We believe very strongly that education is the key to our future because it is our youth who grow up to become our leaders.  Education is also a key pillar in any democracy because it is a direct investment in people.   The U.S. Mission in Nigeria is committed to investing in the people of Nigeria and we are working closely with the Government of Nigeria and the Government of Nassarawa State to provide access to quality education throughout this country, and right here in Nassarawa State.

I am happy to be a part of this ceremony where we are awarding scholarships as part of the Ambassador’s Girls’ and Boys’ Scholarship Program.  These scholarships are an invaluable opportunity for less privileged students to acquire a quality education that will last a lifetime.  The people and government of the United States are providing assistance that will make a real difference in the lives of the children of Nassarawa State.  But this program would not be possible without the support of the Government of this state, as well as our local implementing partner, the Federation of Muslim Women's Associations of Nigeria (FOMWAN).   Our strong partnership has helped to ensure that this program will continue to benefit the people of this state well into the future.

The Ambassador's Girls' (and Boys’) Scholarship Program began in Nigeria in 2004 as part of the U.S. Government's Africa Education Initiative.  The program was designed to increase access to quality basic education in Africa through the provision of scholarships and textbooks, teacher training programs, and other activities.  So far the program has assisted 9,149 Nigerian children. The U.S. Government has provided over $1 million for scholarships in Nigeria.  In Nassarawa State we have 235 beneficiaries in 55 schools.  Because of these scholarships, students who would otherwise not be in school have the potential to become professional leaders who will contribute to the growth and development of Nassarawa State and Nigeria.  I also want to specially highlight those exceptional students who were recognized today for their scholastic abilities.  I want to encourage you to keep it up.
In addition, I want to encourage all scholarship recipients and leave you with this message:  you must take advantage of this opportunity and complete your education, and also respect each other.  I look forward to the day that you put your education to work for the benefit of yourselves, your families, your communities, your state, and indeed your country.  For parents there is no greater joy than seeing your children complete their education and enter into their chosen professions.  Continue to support and encourage them at home. That is one of the greatest investments that you can make in your child’s future.

Please also know that the U.S. Mission in Nigeria will continue to support you as you fight for quality education for the children of Nigeria.  Thank you.
