Remarks by U.S. Ambassador Robin Renee Sanders

Award Ceremony for the Ambassador's Girls' Scholarship Program

Speech as prepared for delivery.
Tafsir Hall, New Horizon College, Minna, Niger State
January 29, 2009

All protocols duly observed.

Good morning.  One of the issues we are working on in the United States is improving our education system.  Education is a key pillar in any democracy because it is a direct investment in the people.   The U.S. Mission in Nigeria is committed to investing in the people of Nigeria and we are working closely with the Government of Nigeria to provide access to quality education throughout this country, including right here in Niger state.

I am happy to be a part of this ceremony where we are awarding scholarships on behalf of the American people, as part of the Ambassador’s Girls’ and Boys' Scholarship Program.  These scholarships are an invaluable opportunity for less privileged students to acquire a quality education that will last a lifetime.  The people and government of the United States are providing assistance that will make a real difference in the lives of the people of Niger State.  But this program would not be possible without the support of our local implementing partner, the Federation of Muslim Women Associations of Nigeria ( FOMWAN).   Our strong partnership has helped to ensure that this program will continue to benefit the people of this state well into the future.

The Ambassador's Girls' and Boys' Scholarship Program is part of the U.S. Government's Africa Education Initiative.  The program was designed to increase access to quality basic education in Africa through the provision of scholarships and textbooks, teacher training programs, and other activities.  So far, the program has assisted 9,149 Nigerian children.  In Niger State we have given out 255 scholarships in 26 schools.  Because of the scholarships, students who would otherwise not be in school have the potential to become teachers, lawyers, doctors, or other professionals, contributing to the growth and development of Niger State and Nigeria.  Since the 2007-2008 academic year, the program also includes boys.

I encourage the scholarship recipients here today to complete your education and then put your education to work for the benefit of yourselves, your families, your communities, your state, and indeed your country. For parents there is no greater joy than seeing your children complete their education and enter into their chosen professions.  I implore you to give them the necessary support and encouragement at home. This is one of the greatest investments you can make in your children’s future.

Please also know that the U.S. Mission in Nigeria will continue to support you as you fight for a stronger education system in Nigeria.  I am happy that the U.S. Government is a donor and partner in improving not only access to education for many young girls and boys in Nigeria overall.  And here today, you students truly are the lights of Niger State.  Thank you.
