October 31, 2008
Abuja, Nigeria
The U.S. Mission to Nigeria will hold events on November 4 and 5 in Abuja and Lagos to celebrate the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election. Ambassador Sanders said the U.S. Mission is organizing these events "in part to share our democracy with Nigerians interested in our elections, but also to underscore the important role of freedom of speech, freedom of the press and freedom of assembly and the importance of civil society and the private sector in any democracy. We have therefore reached out to partners from civil society, the media and the American private sector to support us in these election activities." The event in Abuja is being held in partnership with the Cyprian Ekwensi Center for Arts and Culture and the Alliance for Credible Elections, while the Civic Center and the Center for the Rule of Law are partnering with the Mission for the event in Lagos.
The U.S. Mission is also pleased to acknowledge the support of our event sponsors: Front Gate, Coca-Cola, Rimsom Associates, Motorola, and American Hospital Abuja. To highlight the important role of a free press in a democracy, the Mission has invited print, radio and television representatives to participate as media partners. In Abuja these are NTA (television), Freedom Radio (radio), and Leadership (print) while in Lagos these are Channels TV with John Momoh, President and CEO (television), Ray Power Radio (radio) and The Guardian (print). These media houses will have interactive media centers for the U.S. election event at the respective venues.
