U.S. Embassy Opens American Corner In Kaduna

September 23, 2005

ABUJA - The official commissioning of the American Corner Kaduna will take place on Tuesday, September 27, 2005. The Executive Governor of Kaduna State Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi and the U.S. Counselor for Public Affairs Claudia Anyaso will do the commissioning.

In declaring the American Corner Kaduna open, U.S. Counselor for Public Affairs Claudia Anyaso said the center "represents a common quest for knowledge, for engagement with the peoples and cultures outside our local communities, for exploring new ways of thinking and perceiving and learning about others."

Under the agreement establishing the American Corners, the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy will provide a collection of books, CD-ROMs, and magazines on American history, literature, education, culture and law, as well as educational advising materials worth about $8,000, while the Kaduna Community Resource Center will provide the space to accommodate the materials.

The American Corner is established to serve writers, journalists, human rights activists, students, academics and any other persons and groups interested in the study of the United States of America.
