The U.S. Embassy’s Cultural Attaché Henry Mendelsohn presented a set of Scholastic Press Children’s Books to the Kaduna State Library on June 5, 2008.  The books were received by the Director, Kaduna State Library.  According to Mendelsohn, “the books are investment in the children of Kaduna State and we encourage all the parents to bring their children to this library to read the books and explore our life and culture in the United States.”

One set of books focuses on the African American Experience.  A second set contains biographies of key African Americans in U.S. History.  Another set of books, entitled the Secondary Ambassador Collection contains over 100 books and items for teachers and is a combination of US history, geography, biographies, fiction, science, and sports.  The books are intended for students in junior secondary schools.  The books are published by Scholastic Press in the United States and are all in English.

In addition to this donation books have been donated to over 50 schools in northern Nigeria.  Over eleven thousand volumes have been donated – over two and a half tons of books.

The books will be available to all the parents and children of Kaduna State.
