U.S.-Nigerian Partnership Converts Municipal Waste to Fertilizer

March 6, 2009
For Immediate Release
Abuja, Nigeria

To highlight U.S. Mission efforts supporting Nigeria’s economic growth and development in Nigeria and to underscore the importance of U.S. foreign direct investment and U.S.-Nigerian joint ventures, U.S. Ambassador Robin Renee Sanders visited EarthCare Nigeria’s waste conversion facility in Ikorodu, Lagos, on March 4, 2009.    Founded through a U.S. Government program to bring together leading U.S. technology companies with potential partners in Nigeria and other select countries, the project also benefited from financing through the U.S. Export Import Bank.

Earth Care Nigeria Limited is a joint venture between Earth Care Technologies, Inc. of Arkansas and Dr. Benjamin Ohiaeiri, owner of the Abuja Diagnostic Center.  The project uses state-of-the-art technology and equipment to convert municipal waste into a highly effective organic compost product found to be especially effective in the local soils and with the agricultural techniques used throughout Lagos and the rest of the country.  The project was founded to address local environmental issues, to assist local farmers groups especially women farmers, to increase local agricultural production, and to create employment and has the capacity of producing up to 200,000 tons of organic fertilizer per year.

“The Earth Care Nigeria project clearly illustrates the power of combining leading and innovative U.S. technology with Nigerian vision and drive to address the needs of local communities.  This project stands as a model of how partnerships between U.S. and Nigerian business can help support such important issues as addressing environmental issues, assisting municipal waste management, creating employment for local youths and others, and providing a critical input to local farming communities,” said the U.S. Ambassador.
