Medical Information

Organization and Capability

The best health care in Nigeria is available in private and nonprofit medical facilities, some of which meet US standards. The quality of government medical facilities is unacceptable by US standards; however, the government is committed to resuscitating its health care through systematic funding and revitalization.

Medical Personnel

The quality of health care providers ranges from poor to fair. Most physicians and nurses do not meet US standards of training. Recent graduates lack experience with modern equipment and sophisticated procedures. The number of foreign-trained physicians most likely will increase during the next few years.

Medical Treatment Facilities

Infrastructure maintenance and new construction was mostly ignored for about 10 years prior to 1998. Since then, the government has been upgrading some facilities. Medical facility capabilities will noticeably improve in the next 5 years if funding continues.

Medical Material

Nigeria imports 80 percent of its pharmaceutical and medical supply needs, primarily from European sources. Domestic medical and pharmaceutical manufacturing plants currently are operating at approximately 40 percent capacity. Medical materiel shortages have hindered medical practice, research, and training.

Blood Supply

The blood supply is not safe. Blood-banking services are unacceptable by US standards.

Disaster and Emergency Response Capabilities

National disaster management is not effective or functional. The civilian sector’s disaster management capabilities are poor to nonexistent. The military provides crowd control during disasters but no systemic medical response. The military currently has no resources available for mass casualty response.

These services require pre-registration (at least 2 weeks) to gain member benefits and rates. SOS and Heathrow are available without benefit of membership, but must pay for services in advance (thousands of dollars for even the simplest evacuation).

Social Factors

Little opposition exists to Western medical practices; however, much of the country continues to consult traditional healers because of the absence of adequate Western medicine. In Muslim-controlled areas, there is some resistance to women being treated by male physicians.

- Before Traveling Abroad -

1. American traveling to Nigeria would purchase medical evacuation insurance. Most U.S.-based health insurance will not cover overseas healthcare; contact your Insurance Provider for more information

2. Visit a travel medicine clinic before you leave for Nigeria. Most visitors will require extra immunization and malaria prevention medication.
