The International Visitors and Leadership Program (IVLP)
The IVLP is an important State Department public diplomacy tools for promoting understanding of the United States among current and future opinion leaders and policy makers in the host country. During a typical three-week program, participants travel to the U.S. to observe how American social, economic, political, cultural and educational institutions work and participate in meetings, workshops, seminars, site visits, and even live with a host family. Additionally, participants visit historic sites and scenic areas and attend cultural events.
In 2000, the International Visitor Program celebrated its 60th anniversary. Each year, more than 4,400 visitors from around the world participate in the program. IVLP’s participate individually or as a member of a single-country, regional, or multi-regional group.
During the 60 years of the program, hundreds of former participants have risen to important positions in their own countries. Among the alumni of the program are 186 current and former Heads of Government, and more than 600 alumni are cabinet level ministers. Many former program participants are changing the face of their own countries as journalists, economists, environmentalists, and activists.
The Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy manages the IVLP in Nigeria. U.S. Embassy/Consulate personnel nominate Nigerians for participation in thematic International Visitor Leadership Programs.
Nominations are according to the Embassy’s goals, objectives, and priorities.
A selection committee convenes in March to review the nominees and make recommendations to the International Visitors Leadership Program office in Washington, D.C., which selects the final candidates.
Leadership potential and ability to foster bilateral and multilateral partnerships are criteria for participation in the program.
PAS provides information and support to program participants, beginning at least three months before actual travel to the U.S.
Nigeria has a large alumni association with a national body in Abuja, as well as a large and active chapter in Lagos.
